  • How To's ~ Mitered Mouldings for Windows, Doors and Cased Openings

I noticed in a recent thread that a Studio user appeared to have trouble creating mitered trim for a window. Here are some step by step instructions to achieve that. Keep in mind that moulding sizes vary from market to market, with the standard window or door casing ranging from 2.5 to 5.5"; moulding should be proportionate to room size/ceiling height and architectural style. In the examples, I've kept the moulding the original size 4.88".

The two baseboard and one chair rail pieces shown work better for mitered casings; Baseboard (2) does not have a straight edge on the ends. The crown mouldings simply don't work for mitering. Change the look by flipping the first piece, be sure to keep all the "profiles" the same. (See second example below)

Do the steps in order. The edges need to be aligned well to create a good miter.

Upgrading the millwork in a home is always desirable. Here's a great source for ideas: www.metrie.com For fun, take the Style Quiz under Design Ideas
